Roskilde Museum – 1,000 Years of History from the Prehistoric Period to Today
At Roskilde Museum, visitors can explore 1,000 years of history in one of Denmark’s oldest cities. The exhibitions range from ancient times and the Middle Ages to the modern era, and your visit can be rounded off with a break in the museum café or a browse in the shop.
Discover the city's history in the heart of Roskilde
Since 1929, the museum has been housed on Sankt Ols Stræde in two heritage-listed buildings: the Sugar House, a former sugar refinery from 1761, and Liebes Gård, a merchant’s residence built around 1800. These historic settings create a unique atmosphere for the exhibitions, which span from Ice Age artefacts, the Iron Age and the Middle Ages to more recent times, when the wars of the 20th century left their mark on the city.
The museum features both permanent and temporary exhibitions, where archaeological finds and cultural artefacts bring history vividly to life.
For children and families, there are creative workshops and an entire floor dedicated to interactive activities and storytelling about school life a hundred years ago.
In addition, guided tours are available in both the exhibitions and around the city itself – bringing history to life, from prehistoric aurochs and Viking times to the medieval and modern Roskilde.
